What whole sign bhav means
The rashi is the bhav. It makes a kundli easier to read, and it is closest to BPHS.
We use whole sign bhav. That means the rashi is the bhav: if your lagna is Kumbh, the whole of Kumbh is the first bhav, the whole of Meen is the second, and so on. No cusps, no unequal houses, no argument about where a bhav starts.
Why not the other systems
Placidus, Koch, and the rest divide the houses by time or by space, which produces uneven bhav that shift with latitude. They are perfectly reasonable systems, but they are not what the classical Sanskrit texts describe, and they make two pieces of software disagree about which bhav a graha is in.
If two charts disagree about which bhav Guru is in, the reading was never going to agree either.
What it buys you
- A graha is never split across two bhav, so the reading is unambiguous.
- Drishti becomes easy to check by counting rashi, exactly as BPHS describes.
- Charts at high latitude do not distort.
What it costs
Some readers value the bhav madhya — the precise midpoint — for judging strength. Whole sign sets that aside. We think the trade is worth it: certainty about placement matters more than a fraction of a degree of strength, especially when birth times are often approximate.
