Lagna, rashi, and nakshatra — three different things
People mix them up. They are three different things, and each answers a different question.
Three words get used as if they mean the same thing, and they do not. Lagna, rashi, and nakshatra each measure something different, and each answers a different question about a kundli.
Lagna is a moment
The lagna is the rashi rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It changes roughly every two hours, which is why birth time matters so much — four minutes can move it, and the entire bhav structure moves with it.
Rashi is a position
When someone says "my rashi", they almost always mean the rashi Chandra occupied at birth — the chandra rashi. It changes every two and a half days, so it is far more forgiving of an approximate birth time. It is also not the same as the sun sign you see in a newspaper column, which is tropical rather than sidereal and sits about 23 degrees away.
Lagna is when you were born. Rashi is where the Moon was. They are not competing answers.
Nakshatra is finer
The same zodiac divided into 27 parts instead of 12, each 13°20′ wide, and each split again into four pada. Nakshatra is what the dasha timeline is derived from, and it is where most of the specific reading actually comes from.
Which one to use
- Timing questions — nakshatra, because the dasha comes from it.
- Personality and mind — chandra rashi.
- Bhav placement, and anything about work, marriage, or money — lagna.
A reading that uses only one of the three is not wrong so much as thin. Ours shows all three at the top of every chart, so you can see which the answer leaned on.
